This week, we were assigned to teach a lesson of any kind to the class. I had plans to do a money lesson with R; however, she had a rough Monday and Tuesday, so Mr H decided I needed to work with someone else to make sure "I looked good." Monday flew right past us and we decided to use the day to see who would be the next best choice for me to use for my lesson. I must say, I had some great lessons with two of the boys on Monday (A and L)- guess we should just start running the camera all day :) When I got home Monday, I started thinking of lessons I could do with L since him and I have a good bond and I am always told he works really well when I work with him. Sadly, L was absent today and my hunt continued for the perfect student to work with. The plan WAS to do the lesson in the morning during their work time; however, Tuesdays are different and they go to OT and PT so the work time is all thrown off. Forgot about that when we switched it to Tuesday, haha. Again I learned the value of patience and flexibility with all of this. Mr H and I decided I would do a quick cut and paste letter and animal matching worksheet with M for my lesson. M wasn't having it since it was out of routine for him but I handled it really well, according to Mr H and the aides. Over all M did a great job with listening and trying to focus with everything going on around him. When we finished Mr H and I decided M was doing so well during group work with the story that I was going to read the story with him and get him to interact with me. The book, "Pete the Cat," is one of my new favorites! ( so if you're looking to get me anything I'd LOVE books to fill my future library!) M is a non verbal student, so reading the book was extra fun when I would ask him simple questions or to "help me" or "sing with me," he did really good and tried his hardest and I must say I feel the since of pride when he knows whats coming and can "help me." I know that it has to do with that he has heard this story a number of times but even in group he just started "helping" Mr H too. M's favorite part is "I love my blue shoes, I love my blue shoes, I love my blue shoes." It is adorable to hear him sing!
Third time is a charm, right? Although, I was EXTREMELY happy with my lessons with M, we decided it wouldn't hurt to do one more lesson so I did a phonics, sentence structure with MA. MA did great, as he wrote his sentence "MA likes angry birds" I would ask him questions like what letter is this, what does it sound like, what word did you just write, etc. He was basically doing his lesson and I was just there for moral support and to help him with remembering that the letters make a certain word. He like M was distracted by everything else doing on in the room, but Mr H told me I did a great job at redirecting during my lesson and getting the boys to get back to focusing on working with me.
Overall, all THREE lessons were a success!! I can't believe that I am at the half way mark with this class and will be sadly leaving them in FOUR weeks to move onto my second internship.
